Oil-Immersed Transformer

Details

An oil-immersed transformer utilizes insulating oil as its primary dielectric medium. The internal windings and core are fully immersed in this oil within the tank. Heat generated inside the transformer is transferred via the oil to external radiators, where it is dissipated through natural convection or forced convection (using fans/pumps).

Advantages

(1) Excellent Insulation Performance: Insulating oil possesses high dielectric strength, effectively reducing the risk of electrical leakage and breakdown. Furthermore, the presence of oil inhibits oxygen from entering the transformer, slowing down the oxidation and aging of insulation materials.

(2) Superior Cooling Efficiency: Oil-immersed transformers transfer heat effectively to external radiators. The oil’s high specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity result in significantly better cooling performance compared to air-cooled systems.

(3) Low Noise Operation: Compared to dry-type transformers, oil-immersed transformers operate at a lower noise level, making them suitable for applications where noise control is required.

Disadvantages

(1) Large Footprint: Due to the requirement for a separate oil tank, conservator, and associated piping, oil-immersed transformers generally occupy more floor space than dry-type transformers.

(2) Risk of Oil Contamination: Since the insulating oil can become contaminated over time, regular inspection, maintenance, and oil treatment are necessary to ensure the reliable operation of the transformer.

Applications

Oil-immersed transformers are suitable for large-scale power applications, particularly under high-power and high-voltage loads. They are commonly employed by power supply bureaus (utilities), power generation plants, and large industrial and mining enterprises.
